Even with the downturn in the US economy, there are still ways to afford a family vacation to Walt Disney World in 2009.

One may think a trip to Disneyworld to be expensive, and to be honest, it can be. But there are ways to make a trip to these Florida theme parks within reach of any family budget.

Here are some of the best tips and tricks to make Walt Disney World more affordable.

Buy 4 Nights and Get 3 Free at Disneyworld

To usher in 2009, Walt Disney World is offering a special package rate of 3 nights free when 4 are paid for. This means a 7-night package for a family of four could cost less than $1400 when staying in value resort with a basic tickets package.

The package is valid for most dates between February 9, 2009 and April 4, 2009, plus April 19, 2009, and June 27, 2009. As a bonus, book a stay between February 9, 2009 and March 29, 2009, and Walt Disney World will also include a $200 Disney gift card to use during your stay.

Book this deal online by January 24, 2009.

Get Free Admission on Your Birthday in 2009

As part of their new “What Will You Celebrate?” promotion, Walt Disney World is offering every person free admission on the day of their birthday in 2009.

To claim the free park admission ticket, which is only valid on the exact date of the birthday (which must be proven by a valid photo I.D. like a driver’s license or passport), visit the special Disney promotional website and fill out the form. Then when visiting the park, present the photo I.D. at the park guest services window.

At current park pass rates, this promotion will save over $70 per adult.

Book a Disneyworld Hotel Stay during Value Season

There are three main seasons to Walt Disney World reservations, with value season being the cheapest. Traditionally, this is the time when there are fewer visitors to the parks, such as January, just after the holidays, and September, after school has started in the U.S. Booking just after a major U.S. holiday, such as Easter or Thanksgiving, can also yield lower room rates, as the bulk of the rooms on property are empty following the major holiday crush of visitors to the parks.

Skip the Character Meals

While it’s tempting to book a character breakfast or dinner to make the children in your family happy, it can get very expensive at $20 or more a person.

Save money by visiting with the characters in the theme parks and eating meals in a non-character setting. Your children will get just as much quality time with the characters, especially if visiting during a value season time period, and it will save a family of four at least $80.

Schedule Non-Park Disney Activities

Believe it or not, there are ways to enjoy Walt Disney World that don't involve buying a park admission.

Ride the monorail. Take photos in Downtown Disney's World of Disney store wearing the different funny hats Disney sells. Ride the water shuttles for a free cruise around Disney's resort areas.

These are but a few of the things to do for $10 or Less at Disneyworld.
