While "Hawaii" and "budget travel" aren't terms you typically hear together, the low-key island of Lanai offers some cost-conscious options for your Hawaii vacation.

Laid-back Lanai is the sixth-largest of the Hawaiian Islands, just 13 miles wide and 18 miles long. This intimate island is home to two ultra-luxe Four Seasons resorts: oceanfront Manele Bay and the upcountry, inland Lodge at Koele. Both feature upscale accommodations, championship golf courses and sophisticated dining options.

However, you don't have to spend an arm and a leg overnighting and eating at either of these properties if you'd like to watch your wallet during your visit to "The Most Enticing Island" -- just a 90-minute, $25 ferry ride from Lahaina, Maui.

Budget Accommodations on Lanai

The only other hotel on Lanai, besides the Four Seasons compounds, is the venerable Hotel Lanai, located in Lanai City, just steps away from fun "downtown" dining and shopping options. The hotel was built in 1923 by James Dole to house guests and executives visiting his vast pineapple plantation.

The charming, one-story property has just 11 rooms that range from $159 to $179 a night. Splurge the extra few bucks for a "premium room" with a shared porch -- it's a delightful place to relax on a wicker chair and enjoy the cool evenings in the upcountry; Lanai City sits at 1,700 feet.

Rooms are cozy, with beds covered in pretty Hawaiian quilts, and local artists' work adorning the walls. While each room has a small private bath, there are no TVs on site. Wireless internet access is not advertised, but available. A continental breakfast, with coffee, juice, bagels, toast, muffins, pastries, and fresh fruit, is included in your stay.

Because of its small size, it's easy to get to know the ultra-friendly staff at the Hotel Lanai; after just a few nights' stay there, you'll feel like family.

Budget Restaruants on Lanai

Outside of the elegant dining rooms at the Four Seasons, dining options are decidedly casual in Lanai City, which means they are reasonably priced, too. The Lanai City Grille at the Hotel Lanai is the most expensive in Lanai City, with appetizers ranging from $3 oyster shooters to $14 crab cakes. Entrees ring in at around $28 to $38 each. That said, if you're looking to splurge on one meal on Lanai (or just want to sit at the bar for an affordable beer and a salad), head to this locals' gathering place. Live music makes it the place to be on the weekends.

Otherwise, Pele's Other Garden on 8th Street offers diners huge deli sandwiches for about $8 at lunchtime. A couple could easily split one Turkey & Swiss or Roast Beef & Provolone and feel plenty sated. In the evening, Pele's transforms into an Italian bistro, where pasta entrees hover around $18; individual pizzas are under $10.

Locals gather at the ultra-casual Blue Ginger Cafe on 7th Street in the mornings for affordable omelets, breakfast burritos, fresh-baked pastries and banana pancakes. The afternoon/evening menu is vast, including stir-fries, shrimp tempura, club sandwiches, bacon burgers, fish and chips and much more.

Top off any meal with an ice cream cone, sundae, float or shake from The Sweetest Days, next to Pele's on 8th Street. Or sample a chocolate-dipped banana with macadamia nuts ($2.25). The small shop also sells nachos, hot dogs and chili dogs with rice ($3-6) for a fast, cheap lunch on the go.
